UX for AI: Merging Gamification and Deep Learning for Intuitive AI Interfaces

Ini Nya-Etok

In a world increasingly driven by artificial intelligence (AI), user experience (

UX) has emerged as a defining factor in determining whether advanced AI tools become indispensable assets or frustrating obstacles. At AIENAI, a consulting agency specialising in UX for AI, the focus is clear: create intuitive, engaging, and user-friendly interfaces that bridge the gap between technical complexity and human interaction.

This unique approach stems from academic research, industry expertise, and innovative design thinking. With a background in mathematics and a PhD in Gamification, I’ve had the privilege of fusing theory and practice to revolutionise how users interact with AI systems. This blog explores our journey at AIENAI, the Game ELC+ Framework, and the future of UX design for AI tools.

Why UX Matters in AI Systems

Artificial intelligence holds incredible potential, but its usability often determines its adoption and success. Many AI tools are highly functional but lack intuitive interfaces, leading to frustration, abandonment, and missed opportunities.

At AIENAI, we recognised this challenge early on. Our mission is to humanise AI technologies by designing UX that simplifies complex systems while enhancing user engagement. By blending cognitive science, gamification, and deep learning principles, we ensure that every AI platform we design delivers not just functionality, but an enriching user experience.

The Birth of AIENAI: Bridging Gaps in AI UX

AIENAI was founded on a core belief: powerful technology deserves powerful design. Despite their sophistication, AI tools often suffer from poor user adoption due to overly technical interfaces or confusing workflows.

Our goal is to bridge this gap by crafting AI tools that are effective and enjoyable to use. The team at AIENAI combines experts in UX design, AI technology, and cognitive science, bringing a multidisciplinary approach to every project.

One of the key elements that differentiates our approach is the integration of gamification principles into UX for AI.

My Academic Journey: Mathematics, Gamification, and Deep Learning

My journey began with a strong foundation in mathematics, equipping me with analytical and problem-solving skills essential for both AI and UX design. However, it was during my PhD in Gamification that I truly found the intersection of these disciplines.

My thesis, "Using Serious Games for Adult Deep Learning," introduced the Game ELC+ Framework, a model designed to enhance user engagement and learning through gamification principles.

The Game ELC+ Framework: A Multi-Theory Model for Engagement

The Game ELC+ Framework is built on four established theories:

  1. Octalysis (Elements)

    • Based on Yu-kai Chou's work, this principle focuses on creating engaging experiences by tapping into motivational drivers.

  2. Bloom's Taxonomy (Learning)

    • Aligns interface interactions with cognitive learning levels, from knowledge acquisition to advanced problem-solving.

  3. Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (Channels)

    • Leverages visual, auditory, and kinesthetic channels to optimise information retention.

  4. Martin Ruskov’s Four Evidences of Deep Learning (Support)

    • Ensures that reflection, problem-solving, and synthesis are embedded in user interactions.

At AIENAI, this framework serves as the backbone of our approach to creating intuitive and engaging AI platforms.

Real-World Applications: UX Design Meets AI Platforms

One standout example of the Game ELC+ Framework in action was our collaboration with an AI-based language learning platform.

Gamification Meets AI Learning

We restructured the user experience by integrating gamification elements such as rewards, challenges, and progression systems. Aligning the interface with Bloom's Taxonomy ensured that every user interaction contributed to deeper learning outcomes.

The result?

  • Improved user engagement

  • Higher retention rates

  • More meaningful learning experiences

This project highlighted the real-world effectiveness of blending gamification principles with AI-driven platforms.

The Overlap Between UX and AI: A New Frontier

The intersection of UX and AI offers immense opportunities for innovation. AI systems are inherently capable of personalisation, real-time adaptation, and predictive analysis. Without the right UX design, these features have untapped potential.

At AIENAI, our UX strategies focus on:

  • Simplifying complex AI workflows

  • Ensuring accessibility and usability across diverse user groups

  • Enhancing engagement through gamified experiences

A Human-Centered Approach to AI UX

By applying user-centred design principles and drawing insights from cognitive science, we create interfaces where humans and AI can seamlessly collaborate.

The Future of UX for AI: Innovation Through Integration

The future of AI hinges not only on technical advancements but also on how effectively these technologies are delivered to users. The demand for sophisticated yet intuitive interfaces will only grow as AI becomes more embedded in our daily lives.

At AIENAI, we envision a future where:

  • AI interfaces anticipate user needs before they’re expressed.

  • Gamification principles drive engagement in AI-powered tools.

  • Deep learning frameworks foster meaningful user interactions.

We remain committed to staying at the forefront of UX for AI innovation, continually refining our methodologies and frameworks.

Key Takeaways from Our Journey at AIENAI

  • AI needs human-centred design: Technology must be usable and enjoyable to reach its full potential.

  • Gamification enhances AI UX: Principles from serious games can drive better user engagement and deeper learning.

  • The Game ELC+ Framework bridges theory and practice: It combines cognitive science, gamification, and multimedia learning principles to create meaningful user experiences.

  • Innovation thrives at intersections: UX and AI are a perfect pairing for building smarter, more engaging tools.

Conclusion: Shaping the Future of UX for AI

The journey of merging UX principles with AI technologies is exciting and essential. At AIENAI, we are not just building better tools; we are reshaping how people interact with AI on a fundamental level.

By drawing from academic insights and applying them to real-world platforms, we’re creating experiences that are intuitive, engaging, and transformative.

Whether you’re developing AI tools for education, healthcare, or enterprise systems, user experience is the bridge between innovation and adoption.
